The British government has imposed new sanctions on Russia’s “shadow fleet” of tankers, which Moscow uses to evade a Western embargo and continue exporting oil despite the cap on global sales. This move aims to cut off critical revenue sources funding Putin’s war efforts. Foreign Minister David Lammy’s joint trip to Kyiv with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken highlighted Russia’s acquisition of Iranian missiles, sparking concerns.
This latest round of sanctions targets 10 high-volume offending ships, adding them to the list of 25 previously sanctioned vessels. These ships are now prohibited from entering UK ports and accessing the UK Ship Register. Lammy emphasized that the sanctions would further hinder Russia’s oil trade through its shadow fleet, sending a clear message of solidarity with Ukraine.
In the ongoing support for Ukraine, discussions are underway to ease restrictions on Ukraine regarding the firing of Western weapons into Russia. This strategic move by the UK solidifies the international community’s stance against Russia’s illicit activities. The collective effort underscores the commitment to stand by Ukraine in the face of ongoing aggression and conflict.
