Addressing the Issue of High Water Prices in Juba
Central Equatoria State Governor Gen. Augustino Jadalla appeared before the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) to address concerns about high water prices in Juba City. He clarified that the state has no control over water supply or pricing in the city, as these services are managed by the national government.
Jadalla emphasized the need for a piped water system and suggested government subsidies on fuel and water treatment to lower prices. Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Pal Mai Deng also admitted that setting prices for commercial water tankers is beyond their mandate.
Members of Parliament passed resolutions to coordinate with relevant authorities to address high water prices, including subsidies on fuel for water tankers and efforts to prevent extortion from water tanker drivers. Minister Mai highlighted the need for a larger water treatment plant to meet the city’s growing demand for water.
Efforts are underway to expand household connections and provide relief to residents facing high water prices in Juba. Together, stakeholders are working towards a sustainable solution to ensure access to affordable water for all.
