Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye announced the dissolution of the opposition-dominated parliament and set new legislative elections for November 17. Faye expressed the need for institutional change to fulfill promises of systemic transformation to the people.
Having won the presidency in March 2024, Faye aimed for radical change in the country, focusing on sovereignty and leftist pan-Africanism. However, the lack of majority in parliament hindered government actions.
With the authority to dissolve the parliament and call early elections, Faye intends to gain the necessary support to implement his policy agenda according to Senegal’s constitution.
Addressing the lack of collaboration with the parliamentary majority, Faye criticized their obstructionist approach and mismanagement of public finances under his predecessor. He emphasized the need to publish the court of auditors’ report exposing hidden financial discrepancies.
