Russian troops are making their way towards Kurakhove in Donetsk Oblast from three different directions, in an attempt to advance their position. However, according to Nazar Voitenkov, the acting spokesperson for Ukraine’s 33rd Separate Mechanized Brigade, their progress has slowed down as of Sept. 12. Kurakhove, located west of the Russian-occupied Donetsk, plays a crucial role in the front of Donetsk Oblast, along with the nearby town of Pokrovsk.
Voitenkov emphasized the importance of defending Kurakhove as it holds strategic significance, preventing Russian forces from gaining a stronghold. While Russian troops have intensified their offensive near Vuhledar and cut off gas and water supplies to Pokrovsk, there are signs of stabilization near Pokrovsk.
The town of Kurakhove is actively preparing for defense by creating obstacles such as trenches and anti-tank ditches. Voitenkov highlighted that compared to other sectors, Kurakhove is in a relatively rear position, making it essential to fortify it against potential Russian advances. The situation in Donetsk Oblast remains tense, as both Ukrainian and Russian forces continue to manoeuvre for control.
