Surprise Move: Punjab Government Withdraws Electricity Subsidy for Islamabad Consumers
The Punjab government has taken a surprising decision to withdraw the much-publicised electricity subsidy for consumers in Islamabad for September. According to a statement from Islamabad Electric Supply Company (Iesco), the Rs14 per unit subsidy in electricity bills for federal capital consumers has been suspended by the Punjab government.
The relief package, which was initially planned to last for two months, will continue for consumers in other parts of Punjab until September 30, 2024. This decision will impact around one million domestic consumers in Iesco’s jurisdiction, including those in the Islamabad Capital Territory.
The Punjab government’s move comes after a war of words between political parties over the subsidy announcement, with criticism from various provinces. The decision is expected to save the government Rs3.5-4 billion.
Overall, this development marks a significant change in the energy landscape and highlights the complexities of governance and policy decisions in the country.
