Remembering Pinochet’s Coup: 51 Years Later
“We still have more than 1,100 compatriots who we do not know where they are,” argued Boric
Chilean authorities commemorated the victims of General Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship, which began on Sept. 11, 1973, with a military coup that led to the death of President Salvador Allende and the overthrow of the democratically-elected government 51 years ago. President Gabriel Boric Font’s government announced plans to renovate former torture centers as a reminder to prevent such atrocities in the future. The government is also working towards repealing the amnesty law that protects human rights violators.
President Boric expressed the need to address the unresolved cases of more than 1,100 missing individuals. The government is fast-tracking a bill to exclude pardons for crimes against humanity, emphasizing the importance of justice. Boric and his cabinet visited a former torture center, Venda Sexy, to discuss its transformation into a memorial site.
Interior Minister Carolina Tohá honored victims of the dictatorship by inaugurating the “Hall of Ministers” at La Moneda Palace. The University of Chile paid tribute to student victims of Pinochet’s regime and emphasized the importance of human rights education. Posthumous degrees have been awarded to 126 students who were victims of the dictatorship.
