Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori Dies at 86
Alberto Fujimori, the former president of Peru known for stabilising the country’s economy but also facing criticism for human rights abuses, has passed away at the age of 86 after a battle with cancer, his family confirmed.
His daughter, Keiko Fujimori, made the announcement on Wednesday, urging supporters to pray for his soul and thanking him for his contributions. Fujimori, who rose from obscurity to become Peru’s president in 1990, is remembered for his efforts to eradicate hyperinflation and tackle rebel groups like the Shining Path.
However, his presidency was marred by accusations of undemocratic practices and human rights violations, leading to his exile in Japan in 2000. He was later extradited to face trial for crimes committed during his time in power, resulting in a 25-year prison sentence.
Despite his controversial legacy, Fujimori was released from prison on humanitarian grounds in December. His daughter had announced his intention to run for president again in 2026 before his passing.
