South Sudanese Urged to Engage in Political Dialogue for Election Timeline
The community in South Sudan is facing a crucial moment as stakeholders are called to come together to ensure the transition period ends smoothly and the election timeline is observed. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), stressed the importance of clarity regarding the end of the transitional period and the upcoming elections in a recent interview with Radio Tamazuj.
With the National Election Act 2023 stipulating the dissolution of the Transitional Government by September 22, and the National Election Commission (NEC) announcing a December 22 General Election, uncertainties cloud the feasibility of the upcoming polls. Yakani warned of a potential constitutional crisis if parties fail to reach a consensus before the deadline, urging for urgent action to avert a legitimacy crisis.
Yakani highlighted the role of the Tumaini Initiative in resolving political delays and fostering inclusivity in the peace process. As South Sudan navigates through a crucial transitional period, the engagement of all stakeholders is vital in ensuring peace, stability, and a successful election process.
Let’s hope that the leaders of South Sudan heed Yakani’s call for dialogue and cooperation to pave the way for a peaceful and democratic future for the nation.
