“They say they are making the place more welcoming by erasing any sign of Palestinian culture.”
Three employees at New York City’s Noguchi Museum have been fired for violating a new dress code by wearing the keffiyah, a symbol of solidarity for the Palestinian cause. The museum implemented a policy against clothing with political messages or symbols, stating concern about unintentionally alienating visitors. This decision led to 50 staff members petitioning against the new rules, emphasizing the museum’s attempt to be neutral while banning a cultural garment.
The fired employees and activists have taken to social media, using the hashtag #PalestineInTheMuseum to showcase solidarity. Despite ongoing global criticism of Israel’s offensive on Gaza and accusations of genocide, the museum’s dismissal of the keffiyah symbolizes a larger debate on cultural representation and political stance in art institutions.
