Exciting news from Japan as the country plans to integrate My Number identification cards with driver’s licenses starting in March. This move, under the revised road traffic law, will streamline processes for changing names and addresses by storing driver’s license information on the IC chips of My Number cards.
Individuals with this integration will also benefit from lower renewal fees for their licenses. The National Police Agency further announced plans to offer obligatory driver’s license renewal information sessions online nationwide, following successful trials in several prefectures.
Public feedback on the implementation of the revised road traffic law will be sought from September 13 to October 12. In addition to this integration, the government is set to do away with health insurance cards by December 2024, maintaining separate driver’s licenses alongside My Number cards.
Currently, issuing a driver’s license costs 2,050 yen, set to increase to 2,350 yen under the amended law. Integration with My Number cards reduces this cost to 1,550 yen initially. The My Number ID card system, launched in 2016, assigns a unique 12-digit number to every resident in Japan, linking various personal data.
