Jordanian 2024 elections: Muslim Brotherhood triples parliamentary representation.

The Islamic Action Front (IAF) has emerged as the main winner in Jordan’s recent elections, securing 31 seats in the House of Representatives with over 500,000 votes. This marks a significant victory for the Islamist party, which had previously boycotted the political process.

The elections saw a reform in the voting mechanism, allowing voters to choose representatives at both the local and national levels. The IAF secured 17 seats nationally and 14 locally. Additionally, 27 women were elected, with the minimum age for candidates lowered to 25.

Other notable winners include the Al-Mithaq Al-Watani and Taqaddum parties. The voter turnout was 32%, higher than the previous election. Media outlets praised the Islamist achievements and hailed Jordan’s democracy.

Despite their opposition to peace with Israel, Islamists in Jordan have avoided criticizing the Hashemite family. The lower house of the Jordanian parliament plays a crucial role, though ultimate control lies with the King and his appointed senate.
