An Israeli airstrike on a central Gaza school used as a shelter killed 14 people, including six UN staff. The attack resulted in the highest death toll among UNRWA’s employees in a single incident. The school in Nuseirat was hit twice, where around 5,000 displaced people were seeking refuge. Israeli military claimed to target Hamas members inside the school, but UNRWA disputed the allegations, stating the school had been attacked five times already.
The strike also injured at least 18 others, with the IDF asserting efforts to minimize civilian casualties. UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attack, highlighting the loss of UN staff. The ongoing conflict in Gaza has led to numerous casualties and stalled ceasefire negotiations.
Hamas expressed readiness to implement an immediate ceasefire without new conditions. Efforts by US negotiators, including CIA Director William Burns, aim to mediate a detailed ceasefire proposal. Lingering concerns such as control of strategic territories continue to impede peace talks. The Israeli prime minister reiterated resolve over key areas amidst international pressure. The situation exacerbates, with further casualties reported in different strikes.
