Judicial authorities in Iraq have launched an investigation into the head of the country’s anti-corruption body for his alleged involvement in bribery, based on leaked audio recordings. The Commission of Integrity denounced the recordings as fabricated, blaming “electronic armies” for the leaks.
Corruption is a significant issue in Iraq, with government officials frequently evading accountability. Many Iraqis lack faith in state institutions due to widespread corruption.
Despite planning a press conference to address the allegations, the head of the Commission of Integrity postponed it to respect ongoing judicial procedures. This decision came after he inaugurated the Second Arab Forum for Promoting Transparency and Good Governance.
Earlier, the anti-corruption chief accused a judge of obtaining state land fraudulently, while defending his own land ownership. In a separate case, arrest warrants were issued for individuals involved in embezzling $2.5bn of public funds, known as the “theft of the century”.
