German Chancellor Calls for Peaceful End to Ukraine War
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized the need for exploring peaceful ways to end the war in Ukraine during a speech to the parliament in Berlin. He reiterated the importance of another peace conference involving Russia to achieve a fair and respectful peace agreement that upholds Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Scholz expressed support for inviting Russia to an international peace conference, following a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Both leaders agreed on the necessity of including Russia in the negotiations for a swift resolution to the conflict.
Additionally, Scholz vowed to strengthen efforts to combat illegal migration in Germany, especially after a recent stabbing incident involving a rejected Syrian asylum seeker. The government faced pressure to curb irregular migration, with a particular focus on deporting criminals to their home countries.
Germany continues to be a popular destination for irregular migrants and asylum seekers, with a significant number arriving from Syria and Afghanistan. In 2021, German authorities recorded over 266,000 cases of illegal entry and residence in the country.
