Former CIA Officer Alexander Yuk Ching Ma was sentenced to ten years in prison for spying for China. The 71-year-old admitted to passing classified information to the Shanghai State Security Bureau to avoid a longer sentence. Ma worked for the CIA from 1982 to 1989 and conspired with a relative to exchange national defense information for $50,000 in 2001.
Hired by the FBI
Ma later applied for a job as a linguist at an FBI field office in Hawaii, where he worked part-time between 2004 and 2012. The FBI hired him as a way to monitor his activities and contacts with Chinese intelligence. Ma, a US citizen born in Hong Kong, was first arrested in August 2020.
