The central government has revealed to the Jharkhand High Court the presence of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in the state. They entered through Sahebgunj and Pakur districts, with some acquiring tribal land through ‘daanpatra’. The affidavit highlighted a decline in the tribal population due to conversions and low birth rates, as well as outward migration from Santhal Parganas. The increase in madrasas in the area has facilitated infiltration due to a shared dialect.
There is concern over illegal immigrants in Assam too, given the porous 4096.7-km border with Bangladesh. The court is addressing this issue through PILs on tribal conversions and illegal immigration. Scheduled for September 17, the next hearing aims to address the conversion of tribals and the acquisition of land by immigrants with false documents. The government’s affidavit sheds light on the complex challenges posed by illegal immigration and cultural integration in Jharkhand.
