One proposed solution is for the UK to take charge of its border protection and contribute to managing migrant flows. The emphasis on a closed border and media sensationalism exacerbates the issue of migrant arrivals. Entry into the Schengen area, like Switzerland’s, could alleviate the problem. Former Prefect of Pas-de-Calais recalls the challenges of managing the Sangatte camp, which eventually led to its closure in 2002.

Addressing this complex issue requires collaboration between nations and a shift away from blaming tactics. By reevaluating agreements and redefining responsibilities, a more sustainable solution to migration challenges can be achieved.
