Azerbaijan Making Strides in Balancing Energy Interests with Climate Goals for COP29

BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 12. Azerbaijan is taking significant steps towards aligning its energy interests with the climate objectives set for COP29, according to Ismail Serageldin, Co-Chairman of the Board of Nizami Ganjavi International Center (NGIC).

President Ilham Aliyev’s leadership has propelled Azerbaijan towards promoting renewable energy and transitioning towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly economy. Serageldin noted the government’s commitment to various green projects, including initiatives in Zangilan.

Through President Aliyev’s leadership in the Non-Aligned Movement, Azerbaijan has emerged as a strong advocate for marginalized populations, especially in developing nations.

The NGIC, under Serageldin’s guidance, is actively engaging with Azerbaijan and UN agencies to champion climate action and well-being through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By fostering partnerships and projects in areas like health, food security, and gender equality, NGIC aims to showcase the link between climate action and human well-being.

As preparations for COP29 unfold, Serageldin highlighted the urgency of addressing climate change impacts, advocating for climate justice, and mobilizing financial resources for adaptation and resilience measures in developing countries. He also emphasized the importance of regional cooperation and the need to support the Loss and Damage Fund initiated during previous COP conferences.

With a strong membership base and a track record of hosting high-level meetings, NGIC is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the discussions at COP29. Serageldin expressed optimism that the conference will prioritize a balanced approach focusing on adaptation, resilience, and sustainable development, in line with the overarching goals of the SDGs.
