In a positive development, Armenia saw a decrease in the crime rate in the first half of 2024 compared to the previous year. According to Prosecutor-General Anna Vardapetyan, there were 18,818 recorded cases of crime, down from 19,891 in the same period last year. More than 80% of the crimes were misdemeanors, with drug trafficking cases dropping by 29.3%. However, there was an 8.2% decrease in grave crimes while aggravated grave crimes increased by 17.8%. Vardapetyan expressed concern over the rise in cases of aggravated armed grave crimes, which will be further investigated.
At a Cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Pashinyan instructed the prosecutor-general to analyze statistics on armed crimes and consider implementing gun control measures to address the issue. This proactive approach showcases the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order in the country. With collaborative efforts and strategic interventions, Armenia aims to create a safer and more secure environment for its citizens.
