Returning Community Members in Jonglei State Appeal for Humanitarian Aid Amidst Dire Situation
Community leaders in Jonglei State’s Akobo County have reported that at least 370 individuals have returned to Alali Payam amidst a dire humanitarian situation exacerbated by floods and have appealed for intervention and relief aid.
John Opiew Olok, the leader of the Anyuak Community in Akobo and a former state legislator, shared that the returnees arrived in Alali after wading through floodwaters for 8 days. Their situation is critical as food items were destroyed during a previous raid in May, and now they are facing the effects of overflowing Akobo River.
Opiew highlighted the need for support from stakeholders and government authorities to assist the returning community members. Akobo County Commissioner Puok Nyang Tutjiek acknowledged the challenges, stating that parts of the county are submerged in floodwaters, and efforts are being made to assess the impact of the floods.
As the community pleads for intervention and relief aid, their hope lies in being included in the national program for flood intervention to alleviate their suffering.
