US and UK commit .5B aid for Ukraine

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken (L), Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky and Britain's Foreign Secretary David Lammy attend a meeting in Kyiv, on September 11, 2024.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy visited Kyiv, pledging nearly $1.5 billion in support for Ukraine. They discussed easing restrictions on weapons and providing economic aid to combat Russian threats. The US will offer $717 million in economic assistance, focusing on strengthening Ukraine’s electricity infrastructure. Britain committed to providing 600 million pounds in economic aid and new air defense missiles to Ukraine. Russia’s advances on Pokrovsk and the acquisition of short-range Iranian missiles raised concerns. The US and UK are considering Ukraine’s requests to use longer-range weapons against Russian forces. As tensions escalate, a possible shift in US policy could occur depending on the outcome of the upcoming election.
