USAID Announces Additional $100 Million in Humanitarian Food Assistance for South Sudan
The United States Agency for International Development’s Assistant to the Administrator for Humanitarian Assistance, Sonali Korde, recently visited South Sudan and announced an additional $100 million in U.S. government humanitarian food assistance for the South Sudanese people. The aid, provided through a partnership between USAID and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, will help nearly one million people experiencing acute food insecurity.
During her visit, Korde visited key humanitarian project sites, met with senior officials, diplomatic missions, and UNMISS leadership. The total U.S. government humanitarian assistance to South Sudan for Fiscal Year 2024 now stands at nearly $609 million.
The U.S. Embassy emphasized the need for urgent action to end the humanitarian crisis in South Sudan, including transparent allocation of public revenue for humanitarian response. The Embassy also called for improved safety and security for aid workers and local communities, highlighting the importance of peace in preventing further crises.
The Embassy welcomed the Tumaini Initiative talks in Nairobi and urged all signatories of the 2018 peace agreement to work towards peace. Interparty direct talks at the leadership level in Juba were also deemed essential for progress.
