Turkey’s Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar revealed on Wednesday that Turkey is considering an offer from Tripoli to conduct energy exploration activities offshore Libya. The Libyan government has proposed to collaborate with Turkey using its seismic vessels in the offshore region, which has sparked interest from Turkey.
In 2020, Turkey deployed military personnel to Libya to assist the Tripoli-based government in its conflict against Khalifa Haftar’s forces. Subsequently, Turkey and Tripoli entered into a maritime demarcation agreement, leading to opposition from Egypt and Greece.
In 2022, Turkey and Tripoli signed a preliminary energy exploration agreement, facing strong opposition from Egypt and Greece. Bayraktar also expressed Turkey’s interest in other projects in Libya and mentioned the importance of finding the right project and partner.
Turkey’s tensions with Greece over maritime jurisdiction in the eastern Mediterranean have been ongoing, but recent efforts have led to improved relations. Bayraktar also shared plans for gas exploration in Egypt and seismic work in Somalia as part of a hydrocarbon cooperation deal.
