South Sudan formally ratifies IGAD treaty

The Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) recently ratified the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Treaty, aiming to enhance regional cooperation and achieve sustainable development. According to Scopas Lo-Kabang, the bill seeks to broaden the scope of cooperation among member states to accelerate economic, social, environmental, and political integration.

The treaty mandates each member state to enact legislation for its effective implementation. Barnaba Marial Benjamin highlighted the essential role of IGAD in the peace process in South Sudan, emphasizing the organization’s contribution to the country’s development.

However, Agasio Arop emphasized the importance of South Sudan honoring its obligations under the treaty, as the country has previously failed to adhere to regional and international agreements. The treaty, adopted during the 14th ordinary session of the IGAD summit, aims to diversify areas of cooperation among member states and enhance unity in addressing regional challenges.
