Hamas Leader Offered Safe Passage Out of Gaza in Exchange for Israeli Hostages
Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas’s political bureau, was reportedly offered safe passage out of Gaza by an Israeli official in exchange for the release of all Israeli hostages still being held in the Palestinian enclave. This offer was made by Gal Hirsch, the Israeli government’s point person on efforts to free the captives held since 7 October.
Hirsch mentioned that Israel is willing to provide safe passage to Sinwar, his family, and anyone else who wishes to join him. The main goal is to secure the release of the hostages, demilitarize Gaza, and establish a new system to manage the region.
Despite presenting the proposal to Hamas, there has been no official response from the Palestinian movement. Israel has claimed that Sinwar was the mastermind behind the attack on 7 October and became the effective head of Hamas after the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in July.
The offer comes amidst pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to secure the safe release of the remaining hostages. Qatar Prime Minister Mohammed Al-Thani has also met with representatives of the families of Israeli hostages to continue promoting negotiations for a ceasefire and the return of all captives.
