A Rohingya rights organization is urging the Indian government to release refugees on hunger strike in a detention camp in Assam, some of whom hold UN refugee cards. The Director of the India-based Rohingya Human Rights Initiative, Sabbre Kyaw Min, stated that over 100 people, including 40 with UN refugee cards, are detained at the Matia Detention Centre. He emphasized the innocence of these refugees and the urgent need for their release, highlighting the separation of nearly 1,000 Rohingya refugees from their families across India.
The organization is calling on the government, judiciary, and international community to prioritize the humane release of these refugees. The hunger strike initiated by Rohingya refugees and Chin ethnic group members in Matia underscores the desperation and plight of those seeking safety in India. Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Tewary expressed optimism in resolving the issue promptly.
Since the 2017 exodus from Myanmar, around 1.2 million Rohingya have sought refuge in Bangladesh, with approximately 40,000 Rohingya dispersed in India. The plea for the release of detained refugees resonates as a moral imperative beyond legal obligations.
