Protesters clashed with police in Australia during a demonstration against a military expo in Melbourne, where weapons and technology were showcased from around the world. Despite police anticipating a turnout of 25,000, only 3,000 protesters showed up, leading to confrontations with law enforcement. Activist groups such as Extinction Rebellion and Students for Palestine united for the protest, which was sparked by the Gaza conflict.
During the protests, demonstrators threw horse manure, eggs, and rotten tomatoes at police, creating barricades and setting bins on fire. Police responded with tear gas, stun grenades, and pepper spray to disperse the crowd and arrested at least two people. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese defended the right to peaceful protest but condemned violent actions towards law enforcement.
Spokeswoman Jasmine Duff highlighted the protest’s aim to oppose the weapons on display at the expo and stand up for victims of violence. Despite the clashes, the government stressed the importance of respecting police officers and maintaining peaceful demonstrations.
