Polish-Belarusian Border Buffer Zone Extended by 90 Days

Poland Extends Buffer Zone Along Belarusian Border

The Polish government has decided to extend the buffer zone along the Belarusian border for an additional 90 days, citing a significant decrease in illegal border crossings as the reason for the extension.

Implemented in June 2024, the buffer zone has proven to be successful in reducing illegal crossings by 64%. During the period from June 13 to September 9, 2024, there were only 6,130 crossing attempts, as opposed to 17,030 attempts prior to the introduction of the zone.

With 158 permits issued for access to the zone, including 97 for media representatives, the majority of permits were granted for the areas of Białowieża and Dubicze Cerkiewne.

Measuring 60.67 km, the buffer zone has been strategically designed to have minimal disruption on locals and tourists, excluding towns and popular tourist routes. This initiative not only enhances the safety of border guards and civilians but also aids in controlling smuggling activities and supporting the modernization of security infrastructure.
