Mexico approves judicial reforms after Capitol stormed by Congress

Mexican legislators have approved groundbreaking reforms that will allow voters to elect all judges in the country, making it the first of its kind. The move comes after protesters stormed the Senate to disrupt the debate on the reforms.

Outgoing President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador championed the reform, criticizing the current judicial system for serving the interests of the political and economic elite. He hailed the approval of the bill, claiming it would set an example for the world.

The reform received 86 votes in favor and 41 against, securing the necessary two-thirds majority to amend the constitution. The demonstrations and disruptions surrounding the debate have caused diplomatic tensions and investor concerns.

The plan still needs approval from 17 state congresses before it can be signed into law. Opponents argue that the reforms could erode judicial independence and pose a risk to democracy. However, Lopez Obrador and his successor Claudia Sheinbaum believe the reforms will strengthen the justice system.
