Approximately 300 residents living within four kilometers of the Kanlaon volcano crater in the Philippines were evacuated as a precautionary measure on Tuesday, according to the local government of Canlaon City. The evacuees have sought refuge in schools and community centers away from the active volcano. This evacuation was prompted by reports of a strong sulfur smell coming from the volcano, causing concern among the predominantly farming population.
Classes were canceled, and tourist attractions in the city were closed due to the heightened volcanic activity. Kanlaon’s sulfur dioxide emissions reached a record high on Tuesday, indicating a significant increase in volcanic activity. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology issued a warning about possible eruptive unrest, posing risks such as ash clouds, rockfalls, and projectile impacts to residents of nearby villages.
Rising over 2,400 meters above sea level, Kanlaon is among the 24 active volcanoes in the Philippines. With a history of frequent eruptions, the state volcanology agency raised the alert level in June, signaling the potential for more explosive events. The Philippines, situated in the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” remains susceptible to volcanic and seismic activities.
