Shinjiro Koizumi, Japan’s former Environment Minister and a top candidate for prime minister, has expressed his commitment to respecting the Bank of Japan’s independence in setting monetary policy. In a television program, Koizumi emphasized the importance of smooth dialogue and communication between the government and the central bank.
Koizumi also highlighted his views on currency market stability, stating that excess volatility is undesirable. As the 43-year-old son of former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, he is considered a frontrunner in the upcoming race to select the new leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).
Recent polling by the Nikkei newspaper showed Koizumi as the most favored candidate for the LDP leadership, followed by former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba. The winner of the LDP race will automatically become the next prime minister of Japan, given the party’s majority in parliament.
The stage is set for an intriguing political transition, with the appointed prime minister expected to take office in early October following the LDP’s leadership decision.
