Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan highlighted the absence of territorial claims against Azerbaijan in the Constitution of Armenia during a recent government session. Pashinyan emphasized that any international agreements conflicting with the Constitution cannot be ratified.
He discussed a hypothetical scenario where both countries sign a peace treaty acknowledging mutual recognition of territorial integrity and refraining from future territorial claims. Pashinyan explained that if the Constitutional Court deems this provision incompatible with Armenia’s Constitution, the issue would need to be addressed. However, if ratified, the provision would hold legal authority.
Pashinyan also addressed concerns about potential future territorial claims, stating they would arise regardless of a peace agreement. He pointed out that while Azerbaijan’s Constitution contains territorial claims against Armenia, Armenia is not reciprocating. He accused Azerbaijan of stalling the peace treaty process to maintain open territorial claims.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of resolving differences and proceeding with the peace treaty to bring stability to the region. By demonstrating Armenia’s commitment to peace, Pashinyan hopes to pave the way for fruitful negotiations.
