Judicial authorities in Iraq have launched an investigation into the head of the anti-corruption agency, Judge Haider Hanoun, over alleged audio recordings implicating him in bribery. The Commission of Integrity, which Hanoun presides over, has vehemently denied the accusations, labeling them as slander and lies, claiming that the recordings were fabricated.
Corruption is rampant in Iraqi state institutions, with those in power often escaping consequences. Public officials in Iraq frequently resort to trading accusations to settle scores. A sound clip circulating on social media suggests that Hanoun received substantial sums of money and a luxury car.
The authenticity of the recording has not been verified by AFP. The attorney general has ordered an investigation into Hanoun for bribery offenses based on the audio recordings. The Commission of Integrity plans to hold a press conference to refute the allegations and expose what they denounce as false claims and electronic manipulation aimed at hindering their work.
In a separate incident, arrest warrants were issued for individuals involved in stealing $2.5 billion in public funds, known as the “heist of the century” in Iraq.
