In a recent House Judiciary Subcommittee hearing, House Republicans criticized Governor Tim Walz (D-MN) for his response to the Minneapolis-St. Paul riots in 2020, which they believe led to a surge in violent crime in Minnesota. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) highlighted the impact of “soft-on-crime” policies in America and questioned Walz’s handling of the riots. Minnesotans affected by the increase in crime shared their concerns, blaming Walz for failing to deploy the National Guard promptly during the unrest.
Business owners testified to the increase in burglaries and vandalism since the riots, leading to closures and economic decline in the Twin Cities. Critics accused Walz of allowing the Minnesota Freedom Fund to bail out suspected criminals, worsening the crime situation in the state.
On the other hand, Rep. Lucy McBath (D-GA) defended Democratic efforts to address crime, citing legislation passed during the Biden administration. She emphasized investments in law enforcement and crime prevention, attributing the decrease in statewide crime rates to these initiatives.
Despite bipartisan efforts to address crime, the hearing drew criticism from top Democrat Rep. Jerrold Nadler, who accused Republicans of using the platform for political gain. The Harris-Walz campaign did not provide a response to the allegations.
