Germany’s new border controls upset neighboring countries

In response to a violent knife attack and the rise of the far-right in recent elections, Germany has decided to implement temporary border restrictions to control irregular migration. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser announced the plans, set to take effect on September 16, which include tighter controls at all nine land borders, including those shared with neighboring countries like France and Poland.

The new policy aims to prevent asylum seekers who have already sought protection in other EU countries from entering Germany, with local authorities being empowered to turn away migrants at borders. The move follows the electoral success of Germany’s right-wing party, the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), which has called for stricter immigration policies.

“Germany’s migrant problem is Europe-wide, with migrants heading towards Germany due to its generous welfare system. The recent border restrictions mark an attempt to address the burden on the German economy caused by unchecked migration,” explained George Szamuely, a senior research fellow.

The AfD’s electoral gains have sparked concerns among other EU states, with criticism from leaders like Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The move has been seen as a “panic reaction” by some, while Austria has refused to accept migrants turned away by Germany.

“Germany opened its doors in 2015 and now seeks to expel asylum seekers, causing resentment among EU states. The challenge lies in finding a balance between border security and humanitarian considerations,” added Szamuely.
