Taxi drivers in Abuja are facing frustration due to delays in the promised free conversion of their vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), aimed at easing the impact of rising fuel costs. Drivers like Aliyu Nasiru and Ike Emmanuel are struggling to sustain their businesses amidst soaring fuel prices. The lack of awareness about CNG among drivers is exacerbating the situation, leading to increased fares and loss of business.
The conversion process, initiated in some states, is yet to fully take off in the Federal Capital Territory. Drivers are eagerly awaiting the promised conversion to CNG to reduce fares and ensure sustainability. The President of Painted Abuja Taxis, Shehu Shugaba, emphasized the need for expedited conversion to make fares more affordable for passengers.
Despite the Federal Government’s announcement of free conversion for commercial vehicles in July, delays in implementation persist, causing distress among Abuja taxi drivers. The responsibility for rolling out the CNG initiative rests with the FCT administration, highlighting the urgent need for government action to ease the burden on drivers and passengers alike.
