AHEPA Supreme President Savas C. Tsivicos wrote an open letter to Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos criticizing the decision to restrict the broadcast of the Greek-Cypriot TV series ‘Famagusta’ outside Greece due to pressure from Turkish authorities.

The series focuses on the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, and Tsivicos expressed concern over the Turkish Radio and TV Supreme Council’s (RTUK) influence on Netflix’s decision.

Tsivicos emphasized that while Netflix must comply with censorship laws, Turkey should not dictate global content availability. He stated, “Netflix is complicit in Turkey’s authoritarianism by yielding to their demands.”

He argued that Turkey has no credibility to control global audiences and their viewing choices, especially regarding historical events like the Cyprus invasion portrayed in ‘Famagusta’.
