Tragedy struck in Nigeria as heavy flooding in the country’s northeast claimed the lives of at least 30 people, impacting over a million individuals. The overflow of water from a dam in Borno state’s capital city caused the destruction of thousands of homes, leading to a dire situation.
National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) officials described the scene as “frightening,” with around 40% of Maiduguri city submerged under water. More than 414,000 people were displaced, with fears that the number could climb to one million.
The flood also wreaked havoc on the city’s main hospital, exacerbating an already dire situation. Governor Babagana Zulum disclosed that over 100,000 individuals were displaced, while efforts continued to search and rescue those affected.
The devastation caused by the flooding extended beyond homes, affecting various establishments such as schools, hospitals, and government offices. The collapse of a dam and the overflow of water from neighboring countries were cited as contributing factors.
