3 MO Mayors Call for State Supreme Court to Allow Abortion Rights Vote

Three mayors in Missouri have filed an amicus brief in a case related to an abortion rights ballot question. The brief, filed by the civil rights organization Public Rights Project, urges the Missouri Supreme Court to reverse a lower court judge’s ruling that removed the question from the November general election. Joining the mayors in the brief was St. Louis County Executive Sam Page.

Despite the ruling, the measure clearly defines reproductive rights and allows regulation of abortions after fetal viability. Chief Judge Anthony Gabbert expedited the appeal to the Supreme Court, which will hear arguments on Tuesday. The judges argue that voters should have the opportunity to decide on the measure, which recent polling shows has majority support in the state.

The future of abortion rights in Missouri hangs in the balance, with the Supreme Court set to make a crucial decision on the matter. The mayors maintain that the removal of the measure from the ballot undermines democratic principles and silences voters’ voices on a crucial issue.
