Demands for Extradition of Ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Intensify in Bangladesh
Following a wave of student-led protests in Bangladesh, calls for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India last month, are growing louder. The chief prosecutor of Bangladesh’s war crimes tribunal has labeled Hasina as the main perpetrator responsible for deadly violence during the protests.
Despite being sheltered in India, the interim government in Dhaka has revoked Hasina’s diplomatic passport. However, hopes of her facing trial in Bangladesh remain uncertain as India refrains from providing details on her whereabouts. The interim government leader, Muhammad Yunus, expressed concerns over Hasina’s activities in India, calling her comments “problematic.”
While pressure mounts on India to extradite Hasina, experts believe New Delhi may resist, preferring her relocation to a Western country. Bilateral projects with Bangladesh have been affected, with India pledging to continue development projects while expressing support for a democratic Bangladesh.
Although Sheikh Hasina’s fate may cause political discomfort, cooperation between Bangladesh and India in crucial sectors like trade and development is expected to be maintained, ensuring stability and progress in the region.
