Controversy Surrounding Alleged Extrajudicial Killings in Warrap State
Juba advocate Gabriel Kuot Akok has accused the Warrap State government of failing to address the issue of alleged extrajudicial killings within the state. Akok had given the Justice Ministry a 14-day ultimatum to explain the situation, but no response was received after the deadline expired.
Akok’s intention to sue the state government stems from a law known as the Green Book, which allows for killings by firing squad. The recent firing of a Paramount Chief by the Warrap Governor, who happened to be Akok’s prospective client, has further escalated tensions.
Counsel Akok criticized the governor’s actions, stating that traditional leaders should be appointed by their communities, not by government officials. The governor allegedly asked the chief to apologize for planning to sue the government over extrajudicial killings, leading to the chief’s dismissal.
This incident highlights the ongoing dispute between legal authorities and the government regarding accountability and justice in Warrap State.
