The United States is urging the Transitional Government of South Sudan to prioritize investing public resources in meeting the needs of its people, especially in education and literacy. In a press release on International Literacy Day (ILD) 2024, the US Embassy in Juba emphasized the importance of education as a fundamental human right, essential for economic opportunities, poverty alleviation, and personal growth. The statement highlighted South Sudan’s alarming literacy rates, with 70% of adults unable to read or write, 84% of girls over 15 illiterate, and 2.8 million children out of school.
Despite the challenges, the US government has provided over $328 million to support literacy and numeracy programs in South Sudan, aiming to improve economic well-being, health, and reduce poverty. The ILD, celebrated annually on September 8, focuses on promoting multilingual education for mutual understanding and peace. This year’s theme underscores the importance of literacy in strengthening community engagement and democracy. The US’ call to action emphasizes the critical need for investment in education to uplift communities and build a brighter future for South Sudan.
