The UK Trade Union Congress Strongly Condemns Nigerian Government for Unlawful Arrest of Labour Leader
The recent unlawful arrest and persecution of Nigeria Labour Congress President, Joe Ajaero, has sparked outrage from the UK’s Trade Union Congress (TUC). Ajaero was detained at the Abuja airport while en route to the TUC conference in the UK, raising concerns about ongoing harassment.
In a video released by Vanguard, the TUC called for an immediate end to the Nigerian government’s crackdown on labour leaders. A TUC representative expressed, “Joe’s unlawful arrest is a gross violation of fundamental trade union freedoms. Nigerian unions have our solidarity, and we condemn the government’s actions.”
Ajaero’s detention resulted in missing a crucial international trade union meeting in the UK. There are speculations that his arrest may be linked to his refusal to respond to police summons or a petition from an airline operator.
The Department of State Services in Nigeria has chosen to remain silent on Ajaero’s arrest. The TUC continues to demand an end to his persecution and reaffirms its support for Nigerian labour unions.
