The British government recently announced the termination of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for Jordanian citizens, effective 10 September. This decision comes as a response to the misuse of the system, according to Jordanian officials.
Jordanian citizens could previously apply for the ETA system, which allowed them visa-free entry into the UK for two years. Home Secretary Yvetter Cooper cited the rising number of asylum claims and human trafficking exploitation as reasons for the cancellation.
An official letter from Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi to King Abdullah’s office highlighted the transition period for existing permit holders and the concerns raised by the UK regarding asylum claims and illegal migration routes.
Jordanians have used the UK as a transit point to reach the US through Latin America via Turkey. The cancellation of the ETA system aims to address the misuse and exploitation of the visa arrangements.
