The country’s fast internet speeds and lax laws have exacerbated the issue of sexual cyber violence. Deepfake technology combined with platforms like Telegram have made it easier for perpetrators, mostly teenagers, to target and harass female students and staff members.
While famous figures have legal backing to combat deepfake porn, ordinary victims struggle to seek justice due to low prosecution rates. The recent surge in complaints led to police crackdowns, but challenges remain, especially with underage perpetrators complicating legal processes.
The victims endure humiliation and fear as their manipulated images circulate online spaces. Despite incremental progress, South Korea continues to grapple with cyber offenses, prompting calls for stricter penalties and better protection for victims.
The fight against deepfake crimes requires collaboration between law enforcement, tech platforms, and communities to ensure a safer digital environment for all.
