The Sindh High Court (SHC) has issued notices to various government departments after social activist Sammi Baloch was stopped at Karachi Airport from flying abroad. Sammi filed a petition against this move, leading to notices being issued to the ministry of defence, interior, and other relevant bodies.
Sammi’s lawyer, Muhammad Jibran Nasir, highlighted that she was detained at the airport without being notified about her inclusion in the government’s Exit Control List (ECL). The lawyer emphasized that this was harassment and intimidation through unofficial means.
Concerns arose as the Balochistan government placed several individuals on the Fourth Schedule, leading to restrictions and surveillance due to national security and law and order concerns.
HRCP Condemns Use of ‘Heavy-Handed Tactics’
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan condemned the actions against Sammi and others in Balochistan, denouncing the violation of freedom of movement and the potential legalization of enforced disappearances.
It urged the state to engage with Baloch civil society to address the crisis in the province. The case has sparked widespread concern over human rights violations and the need for transparent procedures in such matters.
