Romania is currently dealing with Russian drone incursions in its airspace, prompting concerns and calls for joint action to address the breaches, especially along NATO’s eastern flank. In response to increased incidents, residents in Romania’s southeastern counties of Tulcea and Constanta have been warned to take cover due to potential air threats from drone incursions.
The Romanian foreign ministry strongly condemned this airspace violation as a “renewed violation” and urged Russia to cease the “repeated attacks” that are contributing to the “irresponsible escalation” of regional security. Despite the incidents, Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu reassured the public that there are no major ground issues following the drone incursions.
On the other hand, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha highlighted Russia’s aggressive actions extending beyond Ukraine and called for maximum support from allies. Similar incidents were reported in Latvia, with a Russian military drone crash prompting increased air defense measures.
NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana condemned the drone incidents and emphasized the need for legislation to allow the country to shoot down invading drones during peacetime due to escalating incidents. Additionally, Ukraine’s President Zelensky called for NATO intervention against Russian drones in European airspace and urged the expansion of Western-supplied weapons against Russia.
