The Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) has clarified that there is no blocking of virtual private networks (VPNs) in the country. Despite rumors circulating about potential VPN blocks, the PTA emphasized that VPNs are not being restricted.
VPNs are essential tools used globally to access restricted content and maintain privacy online. The demand for VPNs in Pakistan surged in 2024, especially after the blocking of X (formerly Twitter) on February 19. Reports from Top10VPN revealed a 131% increase in proxy network usage following the block.
While media speculation suggested PTA’s intention to regulate VPNs, the authority affirmed that VPNs remain accessible. It encourages entities to register their IP addresses for VPN usage to avoid service disruptions. The registration process is streamlined and free of charge.
Contrary to claims of government interference in internet speed issues due to VPN use, a technical analysis by Bytes For All (B4A) indicated that VPN users experienced improved download speeds and minimal disruptions. This analysis challenges the notion that VPNs adversely affect internet services in Pakistan.
In summary, the PTA dispelled VPN blocking rumors and stressed the importance of IP registration for VPN users while maintaining accessible internet services.
