Opposition and BJP clash over summoning SEBI Chief before PAC

In a recent meeting of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), opposition lawmakers clashed with BJP MPs over the summoning of Madhabi Puri Buch, the chairperson of SEBI. Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy urged the committee to call Buch to discuss the regulatory body’s activities. However, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey argued that parliamentary rules did not allow such a demand.

Dubey cited Rule 308(1) which outlines the committee’s functions related to examining government finances, not regulatory boards. CAG GC Murmu supported Dubey’s position during the meeting. The Congress MPs hinted at summoning Buch to question her about controversies surrounding her appointment.

Dubey emphasized that the PAC operates on set norms and procedures and highlighted the committee’s long-standing history. Ultimately, PAC chairperson Venugopal agreed that the committee’s decision would be final.

Buch has faced allegations of conflict of interest, particularly regarding connections with businessman Gautam Adani. Despite challenges from Congress, Buch has denied all allegations. The debate continues as the PAC navigates the issue of calling Buch for questioning.
