The United States imposed fresh sanctions on numerous firms and individuals in Russia and Iran in retaliation for Iran’s decision to send ballistic missiles to Russia. The US Treasury Department targeted 10 individuals and six companies for supporting Iran’s defense sector and identified four vessels involved in enabling the delivery of weapons components to Russia.
Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo stated that the US and its allies are taking action against Iran’s reckless actions in facilitating Russia’s war in Ukraine. Along with the sanctions, the Department of State designated three entities, including Iran Air, and identified five vessels involved in the proliferation of Iranian weapons systems to Russia.
Furthermore, Britain, France, and Germany announced sanctions on Iran’s air transport, including the cancellation of bilateral air service agreements with Iran. In response, Iran’s foreign ministry denied the weapons transfers to Russia. The increasing tensions between these countries highlight the ongoing conflicts in the region.
